Latest sewage & wastewater news

In the latter part of 2019 our contracts manager Ian Murray attended a property in Northumberland to inspect a property’s sewage setup to gain clarification on compliance with reference to the 2020 General Binding Rules.

The 3 bedroom property was served by an old brick built Septic tank and trickling filter with a direct discharge to a watercourse which would have been compliant when the tank was installed. To ensure the effluent was still being treated we took a sample to test for Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Suspended solids, Ammonia.

Unfortunately the lab results were received indicating that the BOD and Suspended Solid counts were not at an appropriate level and as such the property was not compliant with the 2020 General Binding Rules.

To comply with the new legislation it was determined that the best course of action was to install a new sewage treatment plant in the property boundary retaining the discharge to the watercourse this was instead of gaining permissions to install a new drainage field in the neighbours’ land this would allow for all services to be retained within the property.

The system we proposed to install was a Klargester BioTec 1 package sewage treatment plant, the plant was to be located to the right hand side of the existing tank allowing us to utilise and modify the existing drainage. It was identified during the visits to site that there were a number of surface water connections that would need to be separated during the install.

On any installation we take pride in our workmanship and take great care and attention when reinstating the working area, all works we carry out are to a machine finish and we try to limit the visual impact of our works.

Large machinery can often leave its mark and is an unfortunate necessary evil when it comes to have your new treatment plant installed and whilst some companies may get your system installed within a day or 2 – there is a reason why we take a bit longer!
