When winter hits during a septic tank install
When we first attended one site in July 2023 to provide a septic tank compliance check the grass was green and temperatures were sitting in the mid-teens, by all standards a nice time to be in the lake district! The property was located in the South Lakes and had a septic tank discharging to a soakaway which was showing evidence of failure, the area surrounding the old septic tank was damp and the tank above the operational working level.
The findings of this investigation highlighted that the septic tank was not in a functioning condition and therefore was not conforming to the 2020 General Binding Rules. This meant that there was a requirement for some work to be undertaken on site to be legally compliant.
Klargester 2,800 litre shallow dig septic tank
As there were no nearby watercourse our proposal was to replace the old septic tank with a new Klargester shallow dig septic tank discharging to a newly designed and installed soakaway located within the field. In order to confirm the suitability of this and the size of area required we carried out percolation tests, the soakaway was then designed in line with BS 6297:2007 with the solid slotted pipework being bedded and surrounded in a clean granular material.
The septic tank we selected as a replace to serve the 3-bedroom property was the Klargester 2,800 litre shallow dig septic tank, we located the existing inlet drainage prior to the old septic tank and diverted towards the new installation location utilising a new inlet inspection chamber.
Septic tank install
It is no secret that the Lake district is predisposed to harsh wintery conditions, and when scheduling works to take place this always needs to be factored into the scheduling that delays to the project may be experienced. It is a well-known fact that the weather one day can be a stark difference to the following.
But no matter, the show must go on and whilst the snow was certainly not as bad as it could have been it did offer some challenges for our team, thankfully the weather conditions did not worsen and despite the inconvenience our lads were still able to efficiently install the new septic tank and drainage field with no actual delays to the project finish date!
