A long haul journey for a large Sewage treatment tank.

As a company we pride ourselves on offering a nationwide and professional service you can rely on, as we grow as a company we are finding ourselves further and further afield, although a lot of our jobs are located within a few hours travel of our head office we do, on occasion, find ourselves on quite a long haul journey! Back in May 2017 one of our installation teams was required to travel a whopping 7 hours to Pevensey in order to install a rather large bit of kit.

The job first came to light in July 2016 when our contracts manager Andrew Hill first attended the site to quote to completely overhaul the sewage management system on site, working with the British Water code of practise for Flows and Loads it was calculated the size of equipment required.

Two options were initially give to site, either an RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) or a SAF (Submerged Aerated System) – both systems came with pros and cons however due to the site requirements, installation location and aesthetics of the building the RBC was the preferred option.

The tank we proposed as the most ideal for the application was the Kee 25 NuDisc package sewage treatment plant, due to the location of the site and daily flows and loads an Environmental Agency permit was required and dependant on the consent limits the Kee unit can be adapted to alter the effluent quality.

The Kee 25HR NuDisc… And More!

Alongside the Kee unit there were multiple other tanks that needed installing including a Twin effluent pump station, external grease separator and a 18,000 litre holding tank. Needless to say with the amount of systems we were contracted to install the volume of concrete required was over 80 metres in total.

All systems were installed encased in a C25 concrete surround and as per the manufacturer’s guidelines, these are vital to follow and we often see the consequences when other contractors have not followed these steps.

Although with a large volume of aggregates we also required a myriad of machinery, this is inclusive of 2 no. 13 ton Excavators (one complete with rubber pads for working on tarmac), a 6 ton Dumper, a 1.5 ton Excavator and a High tip dumper. These were required over different elements of the works, the larger machines were required for the tank installations whereas the smaller bits of kit were best suited to handle the drainage in some of the narrower parts of site.

Section 50 license.

There was a section of the works whereby we were required to work in the highway to install rising main and cables, this meant that the provision of traffic lights and a Section 50 license was required. This can only be carried out by engineers with the relevant street works qualifications.

Taking just over 4 weeks to install all of the above tanks, drainage, cable to suit and reinstatement was no small task but at least the weather held out for them and they were able to appreciate yet another stunning area of the British coastline.

As we cover most areas in Mainland Britain for both installation and servicing why not give us a call on 01388 537030 and we can arrange for one of our contracts managers to give you a call and arrange a site visit.
