Servicing and the General Binding Rules.

We often discuss the implications of not complying with the General Binding Rules when in relation to a septic tank discharging to a watercourse, however the details outlined on the government website for what is required of you as an “Operator” go into greater detail.

Beyond the rules for the installation in reference to the certification, system size, location, and discharge point there are also requirements that you should know about as the person responsible for the ongoing functionality of your septic tank/ sewage treatment plant.

Once you have checked that you have the right system installed, for example you have a Klargester Bioficient 1 Sewage treatment plant that discharges directly to a watercourse servicing your 3 bedroom property. This is acceptable provided the tank is appropriately maintained and emptied.

Your responsibility as a Sewage treatment plant “Operator”.

As the responsible body for your sewage treatment plant, you are required to do a number of task to ensure that you are not causing an environmental hazard, failure to adhere to these rules and regulations can result in a fine from the EA.

You should have your sewage treatment plant routinely maintained as per the manufacturer’s guidelines which is outlined in you Owners and Maintenance manual, if these are not available your service provider should be able to advise of the required frequency dependant on size of system, usage, and application.

Your service should always be carried out by a competent and experience service engineer, the government website recommends the use of a British Water accredited engineer to carry out the mechanical and electrical checks on your package treatment plant.

Emptying carried out by a registered waste carrier.

Routine desludging should also be carried out by a registered waste carrier and a waste transfer note provided once the waste has been disposed of. It is your responsibility to ensure that the company you use have the relevant waste carrier’s certificate.

The emptying should be done once a year or in line with the manufacturer’s instructions (also outlined on the O&M manual).

Should investigations ever take place it is likely that the environmental officer will ask to see copies of your service and desludging records.
