Durham’s Riverside sewer network set for major £2m Northumbrian Water upgrade

Northumbrian Water is investing £2m to upgrade its sewer network in Durham’s Elvet Riverside area to reduce flood risk.

New sewers are to be built in Elvet Waterside, Old Elvet and Whinney Hill, with work being coordinated with that being carried out in the area by Durham County Council and Durham University. This is set to minimise disruption.

Northumbrian Water’s partner, Mott MacDonald Bentley, will be carrying out the work scheduled to begin Monday September 9. Work is expected to last around 12 months.

Temporary traffic lights will be put in place along Old Elvet and Whinney Hill for the duration of the work.

Northumbrian Water’s project manager, David Groark, said: “This is an important project for us, in terms of protecting customers’ homes and the environment.

“It’s great that we have had the opportunity ahead of the project to liaise with Durham County Council and with Durham University, so that we can co-ordinate work to minimise the impact upon customers in the area.

“We will be keeping information points – such as our online community portal – up to date, as well as letting customers know about timings of the temporary roadworks. But we are happy for people to get in touch if they would like to know more about this project.”
