Fetching approval: Gamma Septic tank

Whilst the vast majority of our installations hold some similarities in the purpose for the works being required there are some circumstances where the technicalities require a different proposal.

As a company we have worked alongside a number of estates across the UK in order to ascertain the level of conformity of the wastewater set up each of their rural properties hold, this has meant that a number of sites needed some modification work in order to comply with the 2020 General Binding rules.

Across these sites we were finding a lot of systems that were either archaic septic tanks no longer fit for purpose or in some instances the tank itself was not the issue, but some mode of rectification work was required, and this was no different for one property in Lancaster.

The main dwelling on the site was served by a septic tank and drainage field which on its own was fully compliant with the 2020 General Binding Rules, however the waste from the adjoining kennels was connected to the unit which could potentially cause a number of complications.

Our proposal – The Gamma Septic Tank.

To rectify the issue, we recommended that all the pipework from the kennels was disconnected from the properties’ septic tank and diverted to a new standalone unit designed to serve the kennels only. The tank we recommended was installed was a Klargester 2,800 litre Gamma, this was selected to handle the wastewater from the kennels including an anticipated 6-8 dog washes.

The Gamma septic tank is third party tested to EN12566 Part 1 and providing the outfall goes to a correctly designed drainage field it will comply with government restrictions, the unit was to outfall to a new drainage field for which we had allowed for the installation of approximately 30 metres total, the exact length and size to be determined by percolation tests carried out on site.

One of the benefits to installing a Gamma septic tank is the unit is simple to install, the design allows for a straightforward excavation to reduce unnecessary additional installation time on site. The unit itself is constructed of a strong and durable MDPE material which is lightweight and watertight.

Septic tank installation.

The procedure for installing the septic tank itself is a skilled but simple process, our site team are required to excavate down to the required depth and level the base with concrete. The new Gamma vessel was then lowered into the hole with the levels being checked before being fully encased in a concrete surround.

The drainage field was then installed to a BS 6297 standard with the slotted pipework bedded and surrounded in a clean granular material. With would be overlaid with a protective membrane and backfilled with suitable excavated spoil.

Once the new septic tank was in place we would disconnect the old inlet pipework and make the final connections to ensure that all the wastewater from the kennels was completely separate from that of the property.
